James Yaun - Fumed Orbs
"Art, for me, is a way of life. Technical precision is only as good as the thought it conveys so I strive to keep that thought pure and my vision large. All of my art objects are created with a process known as fuming. I create colors within my objects by using precious metals such as 24 karat gold and silver.” It is a labor and time consuming process similar to steam rising out of boiling water and condensing on a relatively cooler plate held above. The "water" is 24k gold or silver which "condenses" on the art piece and is covered in multiple layers of clear glass to produce an incredible finished piece.

"Craftsmanship is a dying concept in America"
"I have noticed even among craftsmen a leaning toward the quick trick rather than methodical mastery, as well as a general downfall of “Made in America”. We have become an information society rather than a farming and manufacturing society, to the point that some people have never created anything with their hands. This ability to form something in your mind and then create it were the essential steps to founding our country. A time when the village craftsmen were held in high esteem. Nowadays it is rare to find someone dedicated to the concept of making something as good as they possibly can. The focus of my work is in response to this. I believe in pushing the limits of my chosen medium, fuming gold and silver in borosilicate glass. This is the strength of my work."
